Mexico has always been a very sporting country. Football, boxing, horse racing, tennis and swimming are the most popular. Two large venues have been built in Mexico City: the Estadio Cuautemok located in the city of Puebla de Zaragoza, and the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City, on the outside wall of which is depicted a picture recreating the entire history of sports in the country. Mexico gave the world such famous teams as Veracruz, Puebla, Santos Laguna, Lobos Buap, Club Leon, Monarcas Morelia and many others.
History of football: Liga MX
Mexico football team is called either tricolor or just green. The team held its first international tournament in 1928 at the Olympic Games, which were held in Amsterdam. Mexico won the CONCACAF Gold Cup seven times. At the America’s Cup, Mexicans twice won silver medals (1993, 2001) and three times bronze medals (1997, 1999, 2007). By the way, the Mexicans won the Confederations Cup. True, in 1999, and earlier, in 1995, won bronze. In 2012, the Mexican team won the London Olympics but at the world championships there is nothing much to boast about. Is that Mexico twice became the mistress of the World Cup – in 1970 and 1986.
In the last seven world championships, Mexicans left the group, which is already an indicator. Only teams of Brazil and Germany have a longer series. But there is an unfortunate record: the Mexicans have lost in all World Cup quarterfinals since 1994. There are some more interesting facts. The first yellow card in football history was shown in the match Mexico – USSR, it happened in May 1970. But it was not a Mexican who received it, but the Soviet player Kakhi Asatiani. The first replacement in the history of the world championships was also made in this meeting.
Blanco took part in three world championships. He has 120 matches and 39 goals for the national team of Mexico. Now Quauhtemoc is involved in politics. Another famous Mexican footballer is Hugo Sanchez. He ranks first among the best players of the 20th century in Central and North America (according to the MFFIIS). Also included in the list of the top 100 FIFA players and is the owner of the Golden Boot (1990). Sanchez played for Real Madrid, Atlético (both Madrid), Rayo Vallecano (Spain), Atlanta (Italy), etc.
What is the team of Mexico?
At the moment, in the FIFA ranking, it ranks 21st in the world, higher than the teams of Sweden, Denmark, France and Ukraine, but on average throughout the lifetime of the FIFA ranking (since 1993) Mexico ranks 13th. That is, it is a strong, strong team. Back in 2012 and the beginning of 2013, it ranked 15th in the ranking. At the last five world championships (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010), the Mexican team steadily left the group and each time reached 1 / 8 finals. At the 1990 World Championships (and at the 1988 Olympics), Mexico did not play due to the disqualification of all Mexico teams for 2 years (1988–1990) by FIFA, because in the matches of the youth national team of Mexico (age 20 years) in 1988, fraudulently involved older players. And at the World Championships in Mexico in 1986, the home team reached the quarterfinals.
Mexico’s Olympic football team won the Olympics in 2012. And the youth team (soccer players under 20 years old) won bronze medals at the 2011 World Cup. In the CONCACAF zone, the Mexican national team is traditionally the leader (along with the US team), so the serious problems that have arisen for Mexico now cause shock to the entire population of the country.
Football in Mexico
Football is the most popular sport on the Planet. Perhaps, there is no more or less developed country where a national championship in this sport would not be held. The rules of conduct may vary: the number of teams, the rules for determining the winner of the tournament, the scoring and the like. The Mexican Championship is held according to the regulations, which is significantly different from the holding of the European national championships.
Regulations of the football championship of Mexico
At the initial stage, 18 teams participate, which in one circle determine the eight teams that play the title of Champion on the principle of play off. If several football teams have an equal number of points at the end of one lap, then the following criteria apply:
- The best scored and missed goal difference.
- More goals scored.
- The results of personal meetings.
- A greater number of balls scored on the road.
- The best position in the coefficient table.
- Position in the table “fair play”.
- The draw.
Then eight teams get a number according to the occupied place and pairs are made: 1 – 8, 2 – 7, 3 – 6 and. etc. According to the Olympic system in a two-round confrontation, the winner of the pair is determined, which goes to the semifinal and the final. In pairs, the winner is determined as in the Champions League: the team that scored the most goals in general or away to the next round. If all these indicators are equal, the next round is a team that ranks higher in the national classification table. Now the tournament table looks like from 1 – 8th place: Club America, Atlas FC, Deportivo Toluca, Haguares, CF Monterrey, CF Pachuca, Tigres UANL. These teams also play the title of champion of Mexico.
Proximity to American neighbors played a decisive role in the fate of the latter. By the mid-twentieth century, Juárez had developed significantly and became rich thanks to trade with the US and the gambling and entertainment industry, but as soon as the first drug cartels appeared in Mexico, the border zone between Juárez and El Paso was recognized as one of the most convenient for organizing drug trafficking from south to south. North, the Mexican city has become a bloody intersection of interests of numerous criminal clans. In 2010, the city acquired the sad glory of “the world capital of cruelty and violence”: for the year, 3,910 people were killed on the streets of Juarez – more than ten casualties every day throughout the 12 months. Locals remember the time and the letters from the city authorities, who came to the e-mail: “DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE, DO NOT EXPOSE YOURSELF TO DANGER.” Each of them had a friend or acquaintance that died at the hands of criminals; each carried this burden. Many of them admit that one could feel calm only in one place: at the football stadium of the local team “Indios” (“Indians”, Spanish).
Matches of Indios were two hours of calm when you forgot about everything and when nothing bad happened. When nobody was killed,” – the fans of “Indians” admit. However, football still could not stay away from the surrounding horror. Once, in the same 2010, a police officer’s severed head was found at a stadium in Juárez – the rest of his mutilated body was found later in the Rio Grande River. Football players and team coaches, like other residents of the city, became victims of violence: the criminals stopped one midfielder on the road and took the car at gunpoint; goalkeeper Indios escaped from Juarez with his family after the thief put a gun to his head and took all the money and valuables that he and his wife had; One of the coaches was shot while robbing a cell phone store. None of the perpetrators was found – crime detection in Juarez was always bad.
The “Indians” were a young and vibrant team – they were born in 2005 and starting from the very bottom, after three seasons they reached the top division of Mexico. A ticket to the elite was obtained after an away victory over Leon, and the fans decided to celebrate a momentous event by meeting Indios at the airport. Everything would be fine, only a rumor was spread among the townspeople that the next gangster clashes are expected in the evening and there will be shooting on the streets. But football joy turned out to be stronger than fear – the fans surrounded the airport building and the surrounding streets waiting for the team. That evening was only a holiday and there were no victims.
Cruz Azul is a football club from the Major League Championship of Mexico. The team won championship Primera eight times, second only to “America” and “Guadalajara” in this indicator. The team was also the first to win CONCACAF and reach the Libertadores Cup final, where it lost to Boca Juniors in a penalty shootout. Currently, Cruz Azul is under the guardianship of the well-known company Umbro. This is the highest result among the teams of Mexico. In 2010, the club again expected success – in the playoffs of the prestigious tournament, the club consistently won the Arab Unido”, Pumas UNAM and Pachuka.
The speed of creating a new club was worth only envy. In just six weeks, the name was chosen, the form design was developed, and the Indios Stadium was redecorated, but most importantly, the team was recruited and staffed. It was the hardest task – to persuade people from the world of sports to come to the city with such a bad reputation. Miguel Fuentes, the first coach of the newly formed club, recalled: “When they told me that my name was in Juarez, I thought that I was going to Iraq.” The newcomers selected in the Mexican league draft in Cancún organized excursions to schools and hospitals in order to show a common desire for all to end the common calamity. Often the financial factor triggered anxiety – the increase in players’ wages, significant at the country level, was an additional incentive.
De la Vege, the first woman in Mexico to own a football club, wanted a breath of fresh air, so the old name, Indios, was abandoned, although not all fans agreed with that. The fact is that the association with the heirs of the Indians in these parts is very strong, so almost all sports clubs, from the old baseball team created by father de la Vega to modern basketball, are called Indios. But it was decided, firstly, to forget about the past, and secondly – to attach additional importance to the title. And the new club received the name “Bravos” (“Brave”, Spanish). Questions from the fans – especially the “Cartel” – and caused a new color forms: green, with a large letter “X” across the chest. With “X” everything was clear – it is a reference to a huge monument dedicated to Mexican identity, which in 2013 was installed on the border with the United States on the banks of the Rio Grande – but green? From time immemorial, all the “Indians” – in football, baseball and basketball – wore red, white and black colors, and green has always been the color of the sworn football enemies, “Santos de Torreon”. In addition, green is the main color of one of the leading political parties in the country, PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), to which de la Vega has a certain relation. Therefore, the members of the Cartel again, as before, fill the stands and disrupt the voice, supporting the Bravos, but in principle refuse from new equipment, preferring the good old palette. “And to hell with it, with this color, the main thing – we again have someone to root for,” they confess.
Back to life
The success of “Bravos” was akin to a meteorite. Only six months after the creation, the audacious newcomer confidently walked around Apertura 2015 – the football championship in the second Mexican division is held in two rounds (Apertura and Clausura), the winners of which fight for the exit in the example – and reached the final of the tournament, where he beat one of the oldest clubs countries, “Atlanta”, shortly before celebrating its centenary. Juarez boiled for a few months and dreamed of returning to the elite of Mexican football, but, unfortunately, Bravos did not have enough experience – 2016 Klausura became Nekaksa, who in two games did not leave a chance for the brave and went on increasing.
